A street-safety map that asks for experiences, not names

A Serbian project wants the uncomfortable walk home to become something communities can actually discuss.

An uncomfortable walk home rarely leaves a record. SafeSteps, a civic technology project from Omladina JAZAS Novi Sad in Serbia, is trying to make those experiences visible.

In an interview with Global Voices, project leader Varvara Lazarevic says people can report harassment, discrimination, violence or places where they felt unsafe without registering or supplying a name, email address or phone number. Locations appear approximately, rather than precisely. The platform also lists more than 20 support contacts.

The aim is to spot patterns that can start conversations with communities and institutions about public spaces. This is an early-stage project: the interview does not establish that it has reduced violence or made particular routes safe. Its immediate contribution is a way to share experiences that might otherwise stay invisible.

Nice to meet you

A paper with
a little more juice.

Juicepaper is a daily mix of news worth understanding, nonsense worth a laugh, and things that might actually make your day easier.

Our news takes a little time to settle. We keep it short, link to the original sources, and show where the information comes from. Articles that use AI assistance say so.

Stories labelled Nonsense / Satire are entertainment. The ridiculous bits are made up on purpose.

Read a little. Get on with your day.
